Break on Through

Losing weight and commiting to a healthy lifestyle is a journey with many ebs and flows. There are many moments of bliss when we reach our goals, but there are also moments of utter frustration. Recently, I have felt the frustration creeping in, because of my "slow and steady" weight loss! I have been loosing about a pound a week (which is awesome), but I desire more accelerated results. This week I decided to break through the frustration to reach the sweet spot of fitness bliss with a few tricks:

  • Intensify your workouts
    • Turn off the a/c!
    • Double up on cardio!
    • Throw on a pair of heels when doing squats and lunges!
    • Focus throughout your workout! Make sure your abs engaged! Hit moves harder! Run faster!! Check posture!
    • Sink down lower into squats, lunges, planks, etc.
  • Tweek your diet
    • Eliminate all sugar! Substitute honey and/ or stevia!
    • Eliminate toxins (pesticides, food colorings, preservatives, etc.)!
    • Eat small frequent meals
    • The more servings of organic fruits and veggies the better!!
  • Reward your hard work
    • A small food cheat once a week
    • Clothing in your desired size
    • Fitness equipment or gear

Warrior Breakfast

Background info:

This breakfast was inspired by super-foods utilized by the Aztec warriors prior to battle! Amaranth is packed with protein, iron, fiber and other essential nutrients. In fact, amaranth is a complete protein and gluten free! It's not surprising that chia seeds were also utilized by the Aztecs considering they are high in Omega 3, antioxidants, minerals, fiber, and vitamins!

Other super-foods in this breakfast include hemp seeds, buckwheat, blueberries, honey, cinnamon, and coconut oil. Hemp seeds contain all the essential amino and fatty acids the body needs. Also, they have the correct ratio of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids! Buckwheat packs a nutritional PA-POW! It's high in potassium (helps prevent muscle soreness), phosphorous, the eight essential amino acids, manganese, magnesium and fiber. In addition, buckwheat is gluten-free, reduces varicose veins, and prevents cancer. Blueberries are full of phytochemicals that prevent memory loss and fight diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, lower cholesterol, and stomach ulcers. Raw local organic honey is an incredibly nutritious super-food, that provides numerous medicinal remedies! Honey has a plethora of vitamins and minerals, which also provides the body with an instant source of energy. Also,  it can help alleviate seasonal allergies and hay fever. Cinnamon has been used for centuries, especially in India and China, as a delicious spice and nutritional powerhouse! Not only will it increase your circulation, but it also has anti-viral properties. Furthermore, it aids your body in blood sugar/ insulin regulation. With regular use cinnamon can lower body fat percentage and increase lean muscle mass. Coconut oil has been shown to boost your metabolism and it is a medium chain fatty acid that is an easy and lond lasting fuel source! An added bonus coconut oil helps cleanse your arteries!

  • 2 cups Amaranth
  •  2 tbs. chia seeds
  • 2 tbs. hemp seeds
  • 2 tbs. buckwheat
  • 2 tbs. cinnamon
  • 2 tbs. coconut oil

Away We Go Again

It's 4.5 months after I had my second baby and I am noticing that losing the weight the second time around is exceedingly more difficult than the first! I gave myself the recommended 6 weeks to heal postpartum and then was kind to myself over the holidays; allowing frequent indulgences and working our a few times a week! I had planned on easing my way back into my rigorous workout routine, since my body changed in mysterious ways while pregnant! For example,  the softening of my joints, especially my knees always concerns me! I would hate to cause future injuries by rushing myself into running and other high impact activities.

Since the beginning of the year I have really focused on a high nutrition vegan diet and intense exercise regime! My diet consist of a blender full of green smoothies or super-food smoothies for breakfast, raw fruits and veggies  for lunch, and a high protein vegan dinner! I also graze on nuts and seeds throughout the day for extra nutrition! I have returned to my 6 days of working out and 1 day of rest schedule. I started doing the Tracy Anderson Metamorphosis workout program at the beginning of the year, but quickly found myself bored with doing the same dance cardio routine everyday! So, I substituted my favorite workouts a few days a week to keep myself motivated and engaged! A typical week includes yoga, Zumba, rollerskating, running, and the Tracy Anderson Metamorphosis workout!! So far I have had awesome results and I feel incredible! I am reconnecting with my body while learning to focus and quiet my mind!

I would love to share my love story with holistic vegan fitness with anyone else who is interested in becoming the best version of themselves possible!! There are numerous recipes, supplements, workouts, and holistic tricks I am utilizing on my journey from plump to pin-up that I shall share and discuss! By caring for oneself you are giving a beautiful gift to your loved ones, because you will have so much more to offer them! Let's get inspired and get healthy!

Healthy Asian Food Recipes

Since my Honey Bee LOVES all forms of asain food, I frequently try to incorporate healthy asain food recipes into our weekly meal plan! How can food this delicous be so good for you.... use organic fruits and veggies when possible (but especially if they are on the "dirty dozen list" , substitue low sodium soy sauce, never cook with salt (always add after if absolutely needed), if a recipe calls for butter substitue Smart Balance, Sesame Oil, or Olive oil..... Another awesome trick is to use non fat Greek yogurt in any recipe that calls for sour cream, heavy cream or regular yogurt! God created beautiful healthy food to nourish every aspect of our lives so lets take advantage. Here are some MUST TRY healthy recipes to mix up your healthy diet menu:

Prenatal Paradigm Shift:

Upon finding out the blessed news that I was with child in 2009 and coming to humbling realization that I was already 15 lbs. over my college weight, I embarked upon a quest for nutritional knowledge! Luckily I was able to start relatively close to home because my younger sister studied Nutrition at Texas State and also work at WIC teaching nutrition to mothers. I also read tons of books provided to me through my midwife on the importance of quality food, being informed how your food was produced and the importance of supplements!  Suddenly everything changed….. my distorted love/ hate relationship with food was transformed into a deeper understand and appreciation for its medicinal nurturing capabilities. Throughout my pregnancy I ate a healthy balanced diet and walked 3 to 4 times a week, but I also wasn’t rigid and did give into a few cravings. After giving birth to my beautiful daughter, once again I was humbled by the realization the time had come to lose all 50 lbs.! It was almost overwhelming! Honestly, I was totally disconnected with my body and often doubted if I would ever be able to wear a bikini again!! Sigh!! However, the experience of becoming a mother had completely transformed me emotionally and spiritually into a FIGHTER! Now there was a drive deep within my heart that struck down to the very core of my existence as a woman. I knew that if I exerted the effort to work out and eat healthy the weight would take care of itself (effort big or small always yields results).
Initially, I began working out by doing 30 mins. of intermediate morning yoga (Namaste Yoga on Fit TV), walking a mile 6 days a week and every week I added a mile. This is because I knew that my knees and back couldn’t handle running with all the extra weight and I didn’t want to take the chance of receiving an injury (always take extra precaution when beginning any new exercise program not to push yourself too hard because injuries will sideline you for numerous weeks). When I could walk 5 miles I began walking a mile as a warm-up and then running a mile …… gradually adding a mile a week! I also began adding more cross training workouts like belly dancing, zumba, kickboxing, pilates, Tracy Anderson, etc.

Surprisingly, I feel in love with running and decided that I would like to eventually work up to running a marathon. In fact went so far as to put the Honolulu marathon on my bucket list!  Although, there were numerous 5k’s I planned on running towards the end of 2010 I was unable to squeeze them into my busy holiday schedule. So I set my sights on the Capital 10k, which, is kind of a big deal if you’re from Austin!! I ran and complete the 6.2 mile race, but was left wanting more of a challenge…. My current goal is to continue training for and complete a half marathon in the next couple of months and keep chasing my dreams!
I awake every morning thanking God for my new paradigm and understanding of what it means to be a healthy woman, wife and mom! I’m infused with incredible energy because I cultivate my inner Goddess and I’m in tune with what I honestly need to be happy and fulfilled. I encourage everyone to try to evolve daily…. Constantly rejecting complacency and excuses!!! Get inspired….get motivated…. Get moving!!!!

 Namaste~ Selima Ann
